How we rank products

Review Methodology

Every ranking on Top10Choose is produced by a documented, repeatable process. This page explains exactly how we research, score, and rank products so you can trust what you read.

🔒
Commercially independent scoring. No brand can pay to improve a product score or ranking position. Affiliate relationships are kept entirely separate from the editorial and scoring process. A product that earns us a higher commission receives zero scoring advantage.

Our approach in brief

Top10Choose uses a structured, criteria-weighted scoring system to evaluate consumer products. Every product in a category is measured against the same set of criteria, using the same weights, by the same process. The result is a score from 0 to 100 that reflects how well a product performs for the majority of buyers in that category.

We do not rank products based on brand popularity, price point, or affiliate commission rate. We rank them based on how well they do the job they are sold to do.

The six-step ranking process

Every ranked list on Top10Choose follows this process from start to publication. The same six steps are applied to every category, every time.

1

Category scoping

We begin by mapping the full landscape of available products in a category. This includes identifying all major brands, the range of price tiers, and the key product types or form factors. We cast a wide net at this stage to avoid overlooking products that might outperform more popular options.

2

Criteria and weight definition

Before any product is scored, we define the criteria that matter for that specific category and assign a weight to each. Criteria and weights differ by category because what matters in a mattress is not the same as what matters in a laptop. The criteria and their weights are published in the methodology note at the top of each ranked list page.

Common criteria families include: performance, build quality, value for money, ease of use, safety, durability, and user satisfaction signals from aggregated verified reviews.

3

Data gathering

We collect data for each product from multiple independent sources before assigning any score. Sources we use include:

  • Manufacturer specifications and official product documentation
  • Verified buyer reviews from major retail platforms (Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Daraz)
  • Third-party lab and benchmark data from RTINGS.com, Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, and similar authoritative testing sources
  • Expert review consensus from specialist publications in the relevant product vertical
  • Hands-on evaluation where our team has direct access to the product

We do not accept manufacturer-supplied data as the sole basis for any score. Where manufacturer claims differ from independent test results, independent test results take precedence.

4

Scoring (0 to 100)

Each product receives a score from 0 to 100 calculated by applying the category-specific weighted criteria to the gathered data. The formula is identical for every product in a list. A product cannot receive bonus points for brand recognition, marketing spend, or affiliate revenue potential.

Scores are reviewed for consistency before publication. If two products with similar specifications produce significantly different scores, we re-examine the data before finalising.

5

Editorial review and ranking

Scores determine the initial order. Our editorial team then applies a final review pass to check for data anomalies, confirm current product availability and pricing, and verify that the ranked order reflects genuine real-world performance for a typical buyer. The top-scoring product is designated our primary recommendation for that list.

Where two products score within 2 points of each other, the editorial team may adjust order based on availability, price stability, or support quality, and will note this in the list.

6

Publication and scheduled updates

Every ranked list is published with a “last updated” date and added to our review schedule. Lists are reviewed every 3 to 6 months or sooner if a significant product change, discontinuation, or new market entry warrants it. When a list is updated, the date is refreshed and any ranking changes are noted.

What our scores do not reflect

To be clear about the limits of our methodology:

Brand reputation alone. A well-known brand does not receive a higher score simply because of name recognition. Products are scored on what they do, not who makes them.
Affiliate commission rate. Whether a product earns us 2% or 10% commission has no effect on its score or ranking position.
Sponsored status. A product featured in a sponsored placement is scored by the same methodology as every other product. Sponsored content is always clearly labelled.
Price alone. The most expensive product is not assumed to be the best. Value for money is a weighted criterion, not a tiebreaker.
Review count. A product with 50,000 reviews is not ranked above a product with 500 reviews solely on that basis. We normalise review sentiment, not volume.

Corrections and disputes

If you believe a score or ranking on Top10Choose is factually incorrect, we want to hear about it. Please email [email protected] with the subject line “Score Correction” and include the specific list URL, the product name, and the data you believe is incorrect along with a source.

We review all correction requests within 5 business days. If the data supports a change, we update the score and note the correction on the list page. We do not remove products or adjust scores based on brand requests without supporting data.
